Behind the lens with music photographer Aliyah Otchere

Few things beat hearing your favourite song live. Music photographer Aliyah Otchere has spent her career capturing nights like that and turning them into something you can hold onto.

On World Photography Day, Wednesday, 19 August, she's bringing that craft to FUJIFILM House of Photography in Covent Garden for an evening of photos and hands-on making.

Who's Aliyah Otchere?

Aliyah's a music photographer and director, born in London and raised in Turkey, who's built her name shooting some of the most exciting artists around. Think Raye, Olivia Dean, PinkPantheress, Ezra Collective and Sampha, plus work with The Guardian, Universal Music and The Sunday Times Magazine. Moving between stills and music videos, she reads a shot from every angle.

Before any of that, she was a kid with a camera. A big part of her story is analogue and instant photography, and the pull of holding a printed photo instead of letting it sit in a camera roll. instax™ has been part of her creative process on tour, including her recent work with Raye.

What's on the night

The evening opens with a talk from Aliyah, followed by a Q&A where she'll get into how she started, what photography means to her, and the moments that shaped her path into the industry. You'll hear honest, behind-the-scenes stories from life on tour.

Then it gets hands-on. There's a music-inspired scrapbooking session set to live music, where you'll turn photos, lyrics and memories into something you can keep. The night winds down with time to mingle with fellow photography fans.

Here's how the evening runs:

  • 18:00 to 18:15: arrival
  • 18:15 to 19:00: talk
  • 19:00 to 19:15: Q&A
  • 19:15 to 20:15: scrapbooking and live music
  • 20:15 to 21:00: networking

Why bring your instax™ camera or printer

You don't need to bring your own gear: there'll be instax™ cameras and printers to use on the night. If you've got your own though, it's a good excuse to bring it along.

A scrapbooking session and an instax™ camera were made for each other. Instead of a shot that stays buried in your camera roll, you press the shutter and a print comes out, ready to glue straight onto the page. The instax mini 13™ is a solid place to start: pocket-sized, easy to pass around a room, and built for catching people in the moment.

Want to bring phone photos into the mix? An instax™ printer turns your saved shots into prints you can add to the page. Scribble a lyric along the bottom of a print, or note the date beside it, and you've got a music memory living somewhere other than your phone.

If shooting live music is your thing, our guide to taking your instax™ camera to a gig is worth a read before the night. And for layout ideas, the travel scrapbook kit has plenty you can borrow.
