Your instax™ film pack guide: what to buy and when

You've got the camera, the perfect light, and something worth capturing. All you need is film. But if you're standing in the FUJIFILM House of Photography staring at a wall of instax™ film packs wondering which one to grab, you're not alone. mini, SQUARE, WIDE. Different sizes, different cameras, different reasons to love them.

This guide breaks it all down simply. Which film works with which camera, how many shots you actually get, and what's worth stocking up on before summer kicks off.

The three instax™ film formats, explained

instax™ film comes in three formats: mini, SQUARE, and WIDE. They're not interchangeable. Each one is designed for specific cameras and printers. Pick the wrong size and it won't load.

instax™ mini film

The most popular format, full stop. instax™ mini film produces a credit-card-sized print (54 x 86mm), which makes it easy to carry, share, and slot into albums. It's compatible with the widest range of cameras in the instax™ line-up, like the instax mini 41™, and hybrid models like the instax mini Evo™. If you're buying your first camera and not sure where to start, mini film is the default choice.

Each pack contains 10 shots. Twin packs give you 20. If you're heading to a festival or a beach day, a twin pack is the smart call.

instax™ SQUARE film

SQUARE film (72 x 86mm) gives you a bigger, balanced print, perfect for anyone who wants that grid-ready, symmetrical look IRL. It works with the instax SQUARE SQ40™ and the SQUARE SQ1™. SQUARE packs contain 10 shots each.

The bigger print size gives shots more room to breathe. Good for anything you'd want to frame or keep in an album.

instax™ WIDE film

WIDE film (108 x 85mm) is double the width of mini film. It's the format for big scenes: beach panoramas, group shots, wide-open festival fields. Compatible cameras include the instax WIDE 400™ and the instax WIDE Evo™. Twin packs are available here too, giving you 20 shots.

So which instax™ film pack should you actually buy?

The short answer: buy the film that matches your camera. That's non-negotiable. But once you've confirmed the format, the next question is how many shots to pick up, and whether a standard or twin pack makes more sense for your plans.

If your camera takes instax™ mini film

A single pack of 10 is fine for a casual outing. A twin pack (20 shots) is better for anything with staying power: a full day out, a garden party, a week away.

The instax mini 41™ is a fan favourite for exactly this kind of occasion. No fuss, solid results, genuinely portable. A twin pack of instax™ mini film is plenty for most summer occasions. If you're planning a festival or a full weekend away, grab two.

If your camera takes instax™ SQUARE film

SQUARE film comes in single packs of 10 and twin packs, perfect if you’re heading somewhere busy. The instax SQUARE SQ40™ is a solid pick for occasions where the bigger format feels right: garden parties, birthdays, anything where you want the prints to actually stand out when you look back through them.

If your camera takes instax™ WIDE film

WIDE film twin packs are the move here. The instax WIDE 400™ and WIDE Evo™ are made for big scenes, and big scenes tend to mean lots of snaps. More detail in every frame, group shots, landscapes, wide-open spaces. A twin pack is a sensible minimum for a full day out. Find it on MyFUJIFILM alongside the mini twin pack.

Film picks for summer occasions

Not all occasions need the same amount of film. Here's a rough guide:

Festivals

Bring more than you think you'll need. The light shifts, the crowd grows, and you'll want shots at the main stage, at the food vans, and of the people you've just met. A twin pack of instax™ mini film per day is a reasonable baseline. If you're using a WIDE format camera, take two twin packs for the weekend.

Beach days

Bright, open, natural light. This is where instant cameras perform at their best. A single pack of 10 is usually enough for a day trip, but if you're going with a bigger group, a twin pack of instax™ mini film or instax™ WIDE film is worth having. The WIDE 400™ is particularly good here. It captures the whole scene without cutting anyone out at the edges.

Garden parties

Garden parties tend to run longer than expected. Grab a twin pack as a minimum. You'll use more shots than you anticipate, especially once people realise there's a camera going around. The instax SQUARE SQ40™ works well for this kind of occasion. The prints look considered and are a nice size for popping in an album after.

How to stock up the smart way

A few practical things worth knowing before you buy:

Film packs come in 10-shot and 20-shot configurations. A single pack of 10 is fine for a casual day out, but if you’re buying in advance of a busy summer, twin packs give you more to play with.

instax™ film has a shelf life, so check the expiry date on the box before you load it. Film stored well (cool, dry, out of direct sunlight) should last right up to that date. If you're stocking up ahead of the season, this guide to keeping your film fresh is worth a read.

Cameras don't come with film included, so if you're buying an instax™ camera as a gift, you'll want to add a pack or two to the order. The instax mini 41™ uses standard instax™ mini film, the same format as every other mini camera. You won't need to hunt for anything special.

You can browse and buy the full range of instax™ film packs on MyFUJIFILM, including mini twin packs, WIDE twin packs, and all the film designs in between.

Can I use any instax™ film in any instax™ camera?

No. instax™ film is format-specific. mini film only works in mini cameras and mini printers. SQUARE film only works in SQUARE cameras and SQUARE printers. WIDE film only works in WIDE cameras and the Link WIDE printer. Mixing them up won't damage your camera, but the film simply won't load correctly. Before buying, check which film format your camera takes. It's listed on the box and in the product spec on the instax™ website. Not sure which camera uses which film? The instax compare page lists film formats alongside each model.

What about film designs?

Once you've sorted the format and the quantity, there's a whole other world to explore: film designs. Black frame, Confetti, Rainbow, Monochrome. There are plenty of bordered options across mini, SQUARE, and WIDE formats.

That's a whole separate decision, and one worth making for the right reasons. If you want to dig into which design works for which vibe, own your style with the best instax™ film covers all of that. This guide is purely about getting the right pack for your camera and your plans.
